Women’s History Month Challenge, Day 31: Hedy Lamarr
Hedy Lamarr (1913-2000) was an Austrian-born Hollywood actress as well as a mathematician and inventor who made significant contributions to communication technology.  Lamarr, born Hedwig Kiesler, was Jewish and decided to flee with the rise of the Nazi party.  She had already acted in several films by the time she reached Hollywood, including a nude scene that had caught the attention of American film producers.
Using the same concept that made a player piano work, Lamarr and composer George Anthiel proposed the concept of “frequency hopping,” which they hoped would be used to guide torpedoes without allowing the signal to be intercepted.  Though the idea was patented, the patent was signed over the the U.S. Navy and thus Lamarr initially received no credit for her idea.  Her idea led to the wireless technology that is used so extensively today.
